1975 NASCAR Race 3 of 16- Richmond 500

sorry, I had to skip yesterday's post, I was busy, but today will be a double psot with MLB coming late tonight. Right now here is the recap from the Richmond 500.

I am doing weather for all outdoor sports for now, it was a non factor at Richmond with sunny skies and temps of about 55.

It was by far the most exciting of the three races thus far this season with 5 different drivers leading the 19 segments of the race. The winner ended up being an old veteran, 47 year old Elmo Langley, who won his third career race in 21 years and his first since 1966. Langley is in his final season as a full time driver, he will move to a part time schedule in 1976.

David Pearson in th Wood Brothers #21 won the pole and led the first segment, but blew hsi engine in segment #2 and finished 37th. This allowed part-timer Joe Frasson to take control of the race. Frasson led all the way through segment 10, gaining 10 bonus points for leading the most laps. Unfortunatly, on lap 11, Frasson had to stay late on a pit stop to repair sheet metal and fell back to 18th place. He later blew his engine on the 18th segment and finished 22nd.

Darrell Waltrip would take the lead on the 11th lap pit stops after Frasson's debacle, but lost it the next segment to Richard Childress. Childress led the race through lap 14, but then lsot the lead to Langley, who started 24th and worked his way through the pack. Langley would hold off the top 2 standings leaders Richard Petty and Dave Marcis late to take the checkered flag. Full results are below.

1975 NFL Week 2

Before I start with week 2 of the NFL, I decided that starting in week 3 in the MLB and NASCAR, weather will effect games jsut as it does the NFL. I only included the NFL at first because it is the only sports whatifsports factors weather in. However, starting next week weather will factor into MLB and NASCAR.

That being set, I bring up weather because week 2 in the NFL was a mess. A large system over the Great LAkes brought rain and some wind to that area, while a tropical depression was hanging over Atltanta for the 49ers-Falcons. Here are the scores now.

New England 10 Miami 17
The Dolphina moved to 2-0 in the AFC East with a tight win over previously undefeated New England in hot and humid Miami. With 52 seconds left and the score tied at 10, MErcury Morris plowed in for a 1 yard score, capping off a winning drive for the victorious Dolphins.

Houston 13 Pittsburgh 23
At rainy Three Rivers Stadium, the Steelers came from behind in the 4th quarter to defeat the Oilers. Down 13-12 heading into the 4th, Terry Bradshaw would find John Stallworht for a 38 yard touchdown to win it for the Steelers, who are now 2-0.

Kansas City 17 Oakland 20 (OT)
George Blanda kicked a 36 yard field goal halfway through the overtime period to give Oakland their second win of the year. Blanda also tied the game with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter and the Raiders down 17-14. Kansas City falls to 0-2.

Dallas 16 St. Louis 14
In a hard nosed battle at wet and sticky Busch Stadium, the Cowboys pulled out a tight win over the Cardinals. Roger Staubach socred the lone Cowboy touchdown in the 1st quarter and Toni Fritsch added 3 field goals to help Dallas improve to 2-0.

Green Bay 3 Minnesota 17
At the Met, tight defense by the Vikings and a key Chuck Foreman touchdown run late helped guide Minnesota to victory. The Pakcers had jsut 127 total offensive yards in the game as the Vikings won the battle of NFC Central undefeated teams.

San Francisco 3 Atlanta 7
With a tropical depression on top of the city of Atlanta, the Falcons managed to overcome the elements and defeat the 49ers in a messy sloppy game. Steve Bartkowski found Alfred Jenkins for a 7 yard TD pass for the only touchdown in the game as the Falcon defense forced 5 San Fran turnovers.

Cincinnati 21 Cleveland 16
Down 16-7 at half in Cleveland, the Bengals got outstanding 2nd half defense and two Ken Anderson touchdown passes to defeat the Browns. Cleveland's Greg Pruitt had 234 total yards and two touchdowns. but it wasn't enough.

Washington 20 NY Giants 13
At Shea Stadium, the Redskins won their first game of the year, defeating the Giants. RB Larry Brown had two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving to help Washington improve to 1-1.

Baltimore 24 Buffalo 10
In a sloppy game at Rich Stadium, the Colts upset the previously undefeated Bills. The groudn game was working for Baltimore as they got 3 touchdowns from 3 different players in the win.

NY Jets 20 Philadelphia 38
The Eagles are 2-0 as they put on a clinic against the Jets at the Vet. Roman Gabriel threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third all in a 21 point first quarter to help lift the Eagles to a 2-0 record.

New Orleans 3 Los Angeles 19
The Saints scoring woes continue as they still have yet to score a touchdown in a loss at Los Angeles. James Harris found Harold Jackson on a 4 yard TD pass for the only touchdown of the game as Tom dempsey added 4 field goals for the Rams.

San Diego 10 Denver 27
Floyd Little had two touchdowns for the Broncos as Denver jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised to victory over the Chargers.

Detroit 40 Chicago 7
At Soldier Field, the Bears got embarressed by the Lions. Joe Reed had three touchdown passes, two to Joe Staggers in the win where the Lions scored 30 unanswered poitns after the 1st quarter.

1975 Nascar Week 1- Winston Western 500 (Riverside)

We will start the NASCAR season at Riverside, California, a road course.

Road course specialist Ray Elder took the pole for the race. He led the first of 20 "segments" but on the second segment his lead was taken from him by defending Cup champion Richard Petty. Elder retook the lead on segment 4, but lost it back to Petty again on segment 6. Elder retook the lead on segment 7 and led the next 4 segments, until segment 11, where Chuck Wahl, another road course specialist, took the lead. It wouldn't last though, as Wahl's brakes would fail on segment 12 and he was handed a DNF. Elder would then retake the lead through segment 15. On segment 16, 55 yeard old Jim Boyd, in his first Cup race ever, took the lead after starting 22nd. Richard Petty retook the lead on pit stops at segment 17 and held it until the final segment, where Boyd passed Petty with a charge and won his first ever race.

Second Chance Sports

Hey everyone, I am workign on a brand new project in my spare time that will relook the modern era of sports. Basically I am going to simulate every MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL season using WhatIfSports.com and every NASCAR season using the NASCAR grandstand game. Basically, the project is goign to see just how good teams really were.

The season will be short, 16 games for each team sport plus playoffs and about 20 NASCAR races. Reason being is I can't get through a full season of a sport plus it adds meaning to every game.

I will set up schedules for each season and each team. Daily I will put up results for which games I simulated and give a synopsis.

Hope you enjoy.
