On a beautiful weekend at Talladega, Alabama, the Winston Cup series ran the Winston 500. It also saw its eighth different winner as Harry Jeffseron won hsi first career race in a battle of sruvival. The cars that finished the race had good finishes as only seven cars finished the race.
Bobby Allison won the pole for the race, but would never lead a segment, as he fell back in the field early and blew his engine on segment 3, finishing 30th. Buddy Baker led the first two segments before giving up the lead to Cecil Gordon for segments 3 and 4. Baker and Gordon dueled for the lead for a while, but Gordon would fall out of contention with a blown engine on segment 9.
Jefferson took the lead on segment 7 and held it through 10 before losing it to Baker for segments 11-13. However, on segment 14 pit stops, Baker had vibration issues and opted to work on the car rather than risk a DNF. He fell too far back to win, but still finished 3rd. Jefferson would grab an eays lead and held off Jackie Rogers for the win.

1975 NASCAR Race 7 of 16- Gwyn Staley Memorial (N. Wilkesboro)
We're short track racing again in the Winston Cup Series with a stop in North Wilkesboro. For once a very close race took precedent as a number of lead changs at the end was the cause for an exciting finish. In the end, it was Coo Coo Marlin who won his first career Winston Cup race in 105 career starts.
Cale Yarbourough was the polesitter for this race, but lost the lead on segment one to James Hylton and continued to fall back through the field before blowing his engine on segment eight and finishing 27th.
Hylton held his lead for the first four segments of the race, but on segment five pit stops, Bobby Allison stole first. Allison would lead the most segments as he held his lead through segment 14.
On the final pit stops at segment 15, Allison had problems in the pits and was forced to replace his shocks, effectively ruining his chances of winning. In a race out of the pits, Marlin beat out Dick Brooks and Buddy Baker for first place. Baker would steal the lead on segment 16, but on the final segment, Baker could not hold off Marlin. Brooks made a run at Marlin around turn 4 but came up short and Marlin pulled off the win. Brooks and Baker were second and third. Despite his pit problems, Allison still got 4th, followed by Alton Jones in 5th. Hylton, Benny Parsons, J.D. McDuffie, Carl Adams, and Richard Childress roudned out the top ten.

Race six of the 1975 NASCAR season took place at Atlanta Motor Speedway this week. The weather was perfect all weekend with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70's.
This was also the first week in which the top 20 in points were locked in.
This race did not have much excitement as only 3 drivers led in the race and only 4 finished on the lead lap. A.J. The lead on segment 8 was taken by Kenny Brightbill, who led the remainder of the race. Brightbill held his position and kept his car moving as many top 5 drivers began to drop out of the race behind him. Brightbill, a intermiedate track only drive in jsut his third career, took the checkered flag for the first time. Richard Petty, the points leader, finished a distant second. At Memorial Stadium, Jim Palmer went the distance for the O's as they defeated the Yankees. Lee May's tw orun homer in the fourth was the difference maker offensively for Baltimore.
Philadelphia 4 NY Mets 6
At Shea, a five run second inning outburst by the MEts was enough to give them the win over the Phillies. Thre of those five runs came from a bases clearing double by Felix Milan.
Milwaukee 16 Boston 14
It was a hitting bonanza at Fenway as the Brewers outslogged the Red Sox. The teams went through a combined 13 pichers and had a combined 35 hits. Most of the runs came early as Milwaukee led 14-10 after jsut 4 innings andheld on from there.

1975 NASCAR Race 3 of 16- Richmond 500
sorry, I had to skip yesterday's post, I was busy, but today will be a double psot with MLB coming late tonight. Right now here is the recap from the Richmond 500.
I am doing weather for all outdoor sports for now, it was a non factor at Richmond with sunny skies and temps of about 55.
It was by far the most exciting of the three races thus far this season with 5 different drivers leading the 19 segments of the race. The winner ended up being an old veteran, 47 year old Elmo Langley, who won his third career race in 21 years and his first since 1966. Langley is in his final season as a full time driver, he will move to a part time schedule in 1976.
David Pearson in th Wood Brothers #21 won the pole and led the first segment, but blew hsi engine in segment #2 and finished 37th. This allowed part-timer Joe Frasson to take control of the race. Frasson led all the way through segment 10, gaining 10 bonus points for leading the most laps. Unfortunatly, on lap 11, Frasson had to stay late on a pit stop to repair sheet metal and fell back to 18th place. He later blew his engine on the 18th segment and finished 22nd.
Darrell Waltrip would take the lead on the 11th lap pit stops after Frasson's debacle, but lost it the next segment to Richard Childress. Childress led the race through lap 14, but then lsot the lead to Langley, who started 24th and worked his way through the pack. Langley would hold off the top 2 standings leaders Richard Petty and Dave Marcis late to take the checkered flag. Full results are below.
