1975 MLB Week 2

The second week of MLB action as been completed as division play continues on this week. Here are the scores.


Oakland 16 Kansas City 6
W- Ken Holtzman (1-0)
L- Steve Busby (0-1)

The Athletics continue to roll as they have scored 27 runs in two games so far this season. Reggie Jackson had two doubles and crushed a 3 run homer in the eighth inning to lead Oakland to a second straight blowout win.


Houston 7 Cincinnati 5
W- J.R. Richard (1-0)
L- Gary Nolan (0-1)
S- Mike Cosgrove (1)

The Astros got out in front early on the Reds at Riverfront, helped by a Greg Gross three run homer in the fifth to give the 'Stros a 4-0 lead. They would withstand a late 9th inning Red rally to win and improve to 2-0 on the year.


Detroit 5 Boston 1
W- Joe Coleman (1-0)
L- Rick Wise (0-1)

The Tigers had a 4 run third inning off of Rick Wise and the Sox and that was enough to win this battle of 1-0 teams at Fenway. Ben Oglivie had a solo home run in that third inning for Detroit.


Pittsburgh 3 NY Mets 1
W- Bruce Kison (1-0)
L- Jerry Koosman (0-1)
S- Dave Giusti (1)

The Pirates threw 2 runs up in fifth inning and Bruce Kison did the rest, striking out 8 in 8 solid innings of work to lead the Pirates to victory over the Mets at Shea. Dave Parker hit an insurance home run in the ninth for Pittsburgh.


Minnesota 0 California 1
W- Ed Figueroa (1-0)
L- Jim Hughes (0-1)

Ed Figueroa threw a 6 hit complete game shutout for the Angels, who got their lone run on a 6th inning fielder's choice play to defeat the Twins at Anaheim Stadium. Jim Hughes struck out 9 for Minnesota, but ended up with the loss.


NY Yankees 4 Cleveland 2
W- Doc Medich (1-0)
L- Dennis Eckersley (0-1)
S- Sparky Lyle (1)

Doc Medich allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks in 7.1 innings of work to help the Yankees defeat the Indians. Thurman Munson also had a solo shot for the Yankees in the fifth inning.


Los Angeles 6 San Francisco 1
W- Doug Rau (1-0)
L- Jim Barr (0-1)

A Steve Yeager two run homer in the fourth inning capped off a 4 run inning for the defending NL champs as they defeated the Giants at Candlestick. Doug Rau threw 6 solid innings to get the win for the Dodgers.


CHI Cubs 2 Philadelphia 4
W- Tom Underwood (1-0)
L- Bill Bonham (0-1)
S- Tug McGraw (1)

Underwood walked just one and had five strikeouts for the Phillies in their win over the Cubs at the Vet. Greg Luzinski's two run home run in the bottom of the eighth gave the Phillies a boost towards victory.


Texas 10 CHI White Sox 7
W- Steve Hargen (1-0)
L- Jim Kaat (0-1)
S- Stan Thomas (1)

The White Sox pitching woes continued this week as they allowed 10 runs in the second straight game in their loss to the Rangers at Comisky. Jim Spencer, Toby Harrah, and Mike Hargrove all hit 1st inning home runs to lift Texas to 2-0.


Milwaukee 4 Baltimore 5
W- Dyar Miller (1-0)
L- Pete Broberg (0-1)

Baltimore got back on track with its first win of the year in a tight battle with the Brewers. MArk Belanger's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth broke open a 4-4 game for the Orioles.


San Diego 8 Atlanta 4
W- Joe McIntosh (1-0)
L- Phil Niekro (0-1)

A Tito Fuentes three run homer in the first inning capped off a four run slate for the Padres as they dominated Atlanta. San Diego led 8-0 heading into the ninth before the Braves put up four in the final inning.


Montreal 6 St. Louis 2
W- Dennis Blair (1-0)
L- Lynn McGlothen (0-1)

Good pitching from starter Dennis Balir and a 3 run eighth inning helped guide the Expos to a 6-2 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The Expos are now 2-0 in the NL East.
